Betula pendula

Silver birch

Type: Tree, deciduous

Family: Betulaceae

Foliage color:

A deciduous tree native to Europe and Asia. It is distinguished by its white, peeling bark and weeping branches. It supports immense biodiversity, from insects to songbirds.

Did you know?

The silver birch acts as a biological shield, creating a microclimate that facilitates the succession of slower-growing, more sensitive species. However, it is a relatively short-lived tree. By the time the birch falls, the delicate trees it nursed—the Oaks, Beeches, and Firs—have grown tall enough to take over the canopy.

Lesson

We too can provide a foundation for others. Our role isn’t always to be the tallest “Oak” in the room, but to be the one brave enough to grow where nothing else will.
